History: [SPOILERS ABOUND] Over 4,000 years ago there was a band of four persons travelling together who went down in history as being heroes for having put an end to the Kharlan War.
Kratos had previously served as a knight in Meltokio in Tethe'alla. Apparently he was enamored with the kingdom's princess, but it was never to be. As time passes, he meet a young half-elf named Mithos and his older sister, Martel who hope to stop the war and pursue an end to discrimination against half-elves. Because of his associations with and assistance to the half-elves, Kratos is demoted from his duties as a knight. Left with no other connections, Kratos joins the Yggdrasills' cause. They are accompanied by Yuan, a knight from the rival territory of Sylvarant who harbors feelings for Martel. Seeing young Mithos' skills and eagerness to learn, Kratos takes him on as a pupil. Mithos greatly admires the former knight's strength and accepts the lessons with enthusiasm.

However, their days of travelling soon end when Martel is wounded and killed. Mithos cannot accept his sister's death, and so, consumed with a now twisted understanding of his sister's dying wishes, Mithos uses the Eternal Sword to split the two worlds apart, creating two planets which exist in the same space, but have no knowledge of one another.

Fast forward to the present where a young girl named Colette Brunel is the new Chosen of Sylvarant and has just begun her journey when she is attacked by a group of "Desians" (Renegades in disguise). Though her friends Genis Sage, a young elven mage, and Lloyd Irving, an energetic young dual swordsman who has been raised by a dwarf, come to her aid, they are easily outnumbered... and that's when Kratos Aurion steps in to save them. After discussing it with Colette's grandmother, Phaedra, Kratos is hired as a mercenary to protect Colette during her journey, having proven himself more than capable. Kratos and Colette are joined by Raine Sage, her teacher and Genis' older sister. That would have been all but for Lloyd (and Genis in tow) insisting on coming along to look out for Colette. They are denied this opportunity, get in trouble by visiting the human ranch operated by the Desians, and then get banished from Iselia, having watched the town go up in flames as a result of their actions. They gather their things and the protozoan, Noishe (whom Lloyd mistakes for a "dog"), and head out after the group, meeting up with them again in the desert.

Lloyd is initially envious of Kratos, seeing him as an exceptional swordsman who just so happens to have the nerve to condescend Lloyd's own self-taught techniques; Kratos advises him to improve dramatically or else to not get in the way. Lloyd's frustration is gradually replaced, however, by genuine respect for Kratos who takes it upon himself to start training Lloyd with the sword.

The group travels the world, unlocking seals in the world's various temples. At the Tower of Salvation, however, Kratos shows his true face and reveals that he is an Angel of Cruxis, one of the Four Seraphim, and that he's been deceiving the group this entire time. Though the party does battle with Kratos, they are spared, and soon learn of Tethe'alla's existence.

Meanwhile Kratos has his own agenda and pretty much makes himself scarce as much as possible, although in actuality he is secretly trying to find a way to give aid to Lloyd's group.

It is not until Yuan shows up at Altessa's that things change. While Zelos had giving the party a sleeping drug, Yuan had lured Kratos there to try to "convince" him to release Origin's seal. Lloyd hurries outside since Yuan told him they had his father there, thinking they had captured Dirk. He doesn't find the dwarf, but instead has Yuan reveal that Kratos is Lloyd's biological father. Lloyd strongly denies this and Yuan uses the opportunity to taunt Kratos just a little before threatening to kill Lloyd if he refuses to assist them. Kratos ends up blocking an attack, and saving Lloyd in the process. Lloyd, confused, raises enough fuss to alert the others who are now waking up. The other person who is alerted is the half-elf Mithos who reveals that he's none other than the leader of Cruxis, Yggdrasill himself. Mithos downs Tabitha, Altessa, and Yuan and disappears with Kratos and Pronyma.

The group hurries to Flanoir to obtain a doctor to treat Altessa. It is here that Lloyd once again encounters Kratos (depending on the player's affection levels and who you chose to admire the snow with, etc) who tells him about Anna and how she died. He compares Lloyd's ideals to those of Mithos, but admits there's a clear distinction between them and that's because Lloyd realizes and tries to correct his mistakes. He says that he and Mithos cannot do that, and Lloyd insists that if he realizes this much, Kratos can correct his own mistakes. He asks Kratos to help him find a way to release Origin without sacrificing his life. Kratos gives him no definite answer, just tells him not to die before he does. The next morning, Noishe brings Kratos' gold locket to Lloyd.

Lloyd and Kratos meet in the elven Torrent Forest where they have a match. Kratos tells Lloyd that in order to move forward, Lloyd has to defeat him. In the end Lloyd succeeds and Kratos turns to release Origin's seal. Lloyd, astonished, asks Kratos what he's doing, and when Kratos explains that he's releasing Origin's seal, Lloyd starts yelling at him, saying that he can die at any given time.

Origin is summoned and Sheena and Lloyd are able to establish a pact with him. Now they need to obtain the Eternal Sword in order to defeat Mithos. The problem is that the sword can only be wielded by one with elven blood. Kratos has been working to solve this problem. They bring the wounded mercenary to Dirk's house where he has the dwarf create a ... from items he's gathered. Kratos grants Lloyd his own sword, and along with the Vorpal Blade, Lloyd's at least ready to step up to the challenge.

After defeating Mithos, Kratos returns to Derris-Kharlan and asks Lloyd to send it into the far reaches of space. In the sequel game, Kratos is seen briefly making his final contact with Yuan who has become the new guardian of the World Tree before communications can no longer reach. He asks Yuan and Emil not to tell Lloyd.

Personality: Kratos is a very solemn, nearly apathetic mercenary. He is haunted by his past and has become (perhaps literally as much as figuratively) suspended in time because he's unable to let things go. Though he dwells on his lover's death, the things Yggdrasill is doing that Kratos does not agree with, the discovery that his son is still alive - he doesn't often act. He's the type who watches from the sidelines most of the time and continues to go about the same routines as always - following orders and remaining distant from the world in its entirety. It actually takes his very son to convince him to make things happen. This is not to say that Kratos doesn't act of his own accord, though. He knows how to move his chess pieces, constantly dropping hints to one group or another, and is very resourceful. If you can get through his shell, Kratos is not only a capable fighter, but a knowledgeable - if strict - teacher.
